Vancouver Photo Workshops proudly presents a weekend workshop, "Location Photography & Lighting" with internationally acclaimed photographer Joe McNally.

It's rare to catch Joe McNally in an intimate workshop setting such as this - he usually teaches to crowds of several hundred people. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to catch Joe in a small workshop setting such as this.

Joe McNally is a sought after lecturer and teacher at scores of international seminars. Joe was described by American Photo magazine as "perhaps the most versatile photojournalist working today" and was listed as one of the 100 most important people in photography.

In January 1999, Kodak and Photo District News honored Joe by inducting him into their Legends Online archive. In 2001, Nikon Inc. bestowed upon him a similar honor when he was placed on their website’s prestigious list of photographers noted as "Legends Behind the Lens".

This workshop, designed for experienced photographers who want to become more proficient in the use of light on location, is about learning how to size up a location and find the best angles and light for the assignment.

Much of what professional photographers are called on to do is done on location, including scouting a location, using existing and artificial light creatively, and dealing with physical space.

We explore the use of natural and artificial light, reflectors, strobes, and tungsten to light and photograph portraits, interiors, exteriors, large and small spaces, street scenes, and people in all types of situations and locales.

Our emphasis is on how to "write" with lighting and how to use lighting techniques to shape the mood and color of a photograph. We explore color temperature, ways of working with natural light and strobe, and how to mix the two effectively.

Joe discusses lighting issues that arise in the field when using small, on-camera speed lights, as well as the issues of huge productions. Other topics covered include gaining access to locations, methods for covering magazine assignments, the CEO portrait, corporate annual reports, computer terminals, difficult corporate interiors, multiple exposures, and blending a variety of techniques and approaches.

Working in the studio and on location, we photograph specific assignments. By the end of the weekend, participants have confidence in their ability to use light and lighting systems in a variety of conditions.

Joe’s teaching credentials include: the Eddie Adams Workshop, the National Geographic Masters of Contemporary Photography, the Santa Fe Workshops, the Smithsonian Institute Masters of Photography, Rochester Institute of Technology, Maine Photo Workshops, Department of Defense Worldwide Military Workshops, and the Disney Institute.

He has also worked on numerous "Day in the Life" projects. One of McNally’s most notable large scale projects, "Faces of Ground Zero - Giant Polaroid Collection", has become known as one of the most primary and significant artistic responses to the tragedy at the World Trade Center.

Basic to Intermediate photography and lighting knowledge required.

Enrollment:

Maximum 15 participants.

Equipment Needed:

Bring your film or digital SLR camera (must have manual controls) and at least 1 lens.
Optional: additional lenses, camera flash, tripod or laptop.

We Provide:

All model and location fees. Course content as outlined above. Use of our digital facilities to view, edit and print your images. Refreshments each day.

Early-Bird Discount:

If full payment is received by thge Early Bird Discount Discount deadline, you will receive the indicated discount amount off regular tuition rates.

Group Discount:

A 5% discount will be appplied if 3 or more people register at the same time for the same workshop. (All 3 tuitions must be paid for by one credit card to be considered a group registration.) Please follow the instructions on the online registration page.

In order to provide the best learning environment possible VPW keeps class sizes limited to 12-15 people (depending on the workshop). This is but one reason that we count on you to attend your chosen class, once you have registered for it.

If you must withdraw for any reason please be aware of our refund policy as follows:

For our Master Photographer Series workshops, 1 to 5 days in length, VPW requires 60 days written notice (before the workshop start date) of your withdrawal in order to provide a refund. VPW may retain 15% of fees paid or $150 minimum in processing your refund. If the tuition is less than $500 the minimum fee drops to $75.

Within 45 days of the Master Photographer Series workshop date all fees paid are non-refundable.
