About the Instructor

Syx Langemann is currently working with Vancouver Photo Workshops & PhotoHaus Gallery. Originally from the Windsor area, and graduated from the University of Windsor with a BFA in 1999. He later relocated to Vancouver where he has been focusing his camera on the people and places in his own community of East Vancouver.

Syx continually pushes his photography, training with and assisting internationally known photographers including Joe McNally, Ralph Gibson, and Greg Gorman.

Influenced greatly by his experience assisting Joe McNally, his recent project in Mainly Main Magazine focuses on the creative use of light and environment to produce lasting and powerful portraits. Where as, in stark contrast his street photography project, NoGraffito documents text on the alley walls of Vancouver working only with ambient light.

Saturday May 26th, 10am - 5pm

This one day intensive workshop is designed to provide you with a basic understanding of the practical aspects of working on location with professional lighting equipment.

We will concentrate on introducing you to the many options available when working with location lighting. From ON & OFF camera flashes, to using highly specialized professional equipment like Hensel and Profoto battery powered strobes, this workshop will provide you with solutions to the problems of locations and controlling light.

We'll cover technical concepts such as the 'inverse square rule' or 'key shifting' in a practical and easy to understand manner, then apply that knowledge right away by shooting models in the afternoon.

Following the lecture in the AM, the afternoon will be spent with hands-on shooting exercises 'on location'. We'll be shooting outside (a short walk from our studio) and use a covered area depending on the weather. You'll be working with portable camera flashes (you are welcome to bring your own as well) and professional battery strobe equipment like the Profoto Pro 7B, using light modifiers such as beauty dishes, softboxes, umbrellas, bare bulb reflectors etc...

While outside we'll be creating images using, for example, the popular 'key shifting' technique, as well as mixing color temperatures using colored gels on the strobe equipment.

At VPW, we believe in using the highest quality equipment. In addition, you'll be working with professional models, so expect to take home great images suitable to add to your portfolio.

We will be using a digital camera for demonstrations but you will be expected to use your own camera for the location shoots. You may use either film or digital cameras in this workshop.

Intro Students

"Thank you Syx --- for the links, the excellent training/tips you gave this weekend. While my head did feel like it were going to explode, I definitely can appreciate that I've got more tools in my kit than before taking the course. I have a better feel for where I'm going when I press the trigger on my camera, that's for sure!"

"Though everything was at blazing speed, I enjoyed it a lot and I have to say your energy was contagious."

Lightroom Students

"I wanted to take a minute and thank you for impressing a number of good habits onto me, particularly with working confidently in Lightroom. It's true that after the Lightroom weekend with you, I had some serious gut checks to make about my workflow and backup processes. It was a chore to get everything backed up properly - but really worth it. I'm proud of what I've done, but I really could not have reached this place, today, without your influence in the two workshops I've taken."

Location Lighting Students

"Again, thanks for the class you're a great instructor and I like the way you teach. You obviously have a strong passion for photography. If you're ever going shooting around the streets I'd love to tag along."

Intro to Digital

"I believe in photography as a lifestyle.Your photography is direct reflection of who you are and your own personal experiences, and your camera is the tool with which you translate your own reality. I like helping in both a technical and an artistic way to guide students in achieving their vision, and expressing themselves, no matter how different that vision may be. We should be able to lose ourselves in the enjoyment of photography and my role at Vancouver Photo Workshops is to make sure my students obtain that level of intimacy and involvement in their work."
