August 18th - 21st, 2008
Vancouver Photo Workshops proudly announces
a four day workshop, "Photographing
the Nude" with internationally acclaimed
photographer Ralph Gibson to be held
from August 18th -21st, 2008. Set in beautiful Vancouver,
British Columbia, this will be the only workshop scheduled
for all of North America this year by Mr. Gibson! This
is a once in a lifetime opportunity to expand your visual
horizons under the guidance of one of the great masters
in contemporary photography. Take part and experience
a renewed sense of energy, inspiration and vitality in
your photography.
Motivated by the big success of
our sold out Ralph Gibson Workshops in 2005, 2006, and 2007, we are proud
to bring Mr. Gibson back this year. Students have raved
about their experience with Mr. Gibson last year, calling
the workshop "...a life changing experience".

About
the Artist:
Ralph Gibson is one of the most
influential and well-known photographers alive today.
His images are part of the permanent collections
of many of the most important institutions in the
world including the Museum of Modern Art in New
York and San Francisco, The Whitney Museum and the
Smithsonian Institute. A renowned lecturer and instructor,
Mr. Gibson's workshops are immediate sell-outs around
the world. Former participants have raved about
their experiences, and agree that their vision and
photography skills have improved dramatically. |
The four days will consist of a number of opportunities
to advance your skills and shape your unique vision. Be
inspired to break into new visual territory, and create
images you’ll be proud to add to your portfolio.
You will be working with models every day (at a ratio
of one model to every four students) both in studio and
in exclusive locations around Vancouver. There will be
ample shooting opportunity both in studio and on location
over the four-day period, and lots of time has been reserved
for in-depth review and critique of your imagery as well.
The workshop will convene on Monday morning at 10:00
am and will run until Thursday evening 5pm, when Mr. Gibson
will be required to fly back to New York City.
Ralph Gibson is a master of dramatic
understatement. His high-contrast pictures - usually focusing
on one geometric element (the corner of a room) or a single
human gesture (the curve of a hand) - form a kind of dream-narrative
when gathered together. Or, as Gibson puts it: 'I embrace
the abstract in photography and exist on a few bits of
order extracted from the chaos of reality'
The workshop will begin with an in-depth review and critique
of each participant’s portfolio or body of work.
After this initial session, the critiques will continue
throughout the workshop on a frequent basis. Each day
will present a different location and shooting opportunity.
Using the nude figure as the point of departure, participants
will learn how to see in terms of texture, shape and form.
Mr. Gibson will address topics such as: finding your visual
signature, seeing vs. perception, the importance of point
of departure in your image making process, the alchemy
of light and film, and much more.
