The Fine Art Black and White Landscape and Long Exposure Workshop:

"Marc's skill and enthusiasm for teaching is only matched by his incredibly inspiring photographs. Thank you for a great workshop today!"

"The class was amazing and my photography is at a new level. To make matters worse, I can’t take classes anywhere else now since they just aren’t up to the standard set by Vancouver Photo Workshops; the competition is a waste of time by comparison."

This long-awaited workshop will teach you how to make stunning black and white landscape images using a variety of techniques, including long-exposures of 15+ minutes.

This is the only workshop available in North America that teaches this sought after technique, but we'll also cover more traditional approaches. The goal of this workshop is to produce stunning black and white landscape images, be it using long exposures or other techniques such as color filtering, HDR (high dynamic range), infrared effects, etc. These techniques will all be discussed and presented.

Digital camera equipment, or film in any format (including 4x5 and larger) can be used.

Your instructor Marc is a local award winning fine-art photographer. His images have been widely exhbited in Canada, the US and Europe. He has been working on his current series of fine-art black and white landscapes for over 4 years, refining his vision and techniques along the way.

Anyone who has ever tried to use long exposure techniques will quickly recognize that it is not only a serious technical challenge, but also an emotional and visionary one. Where and how do you find suitable subjects, and what approach do you use to photograph them. What techniques do you employ to turn everyday subjects into stunning pieces of photographic art?

When I am out shooting in the field, I often hear comments like this: Excuse me, sir, but what are you photographing right now? All I see is water, how can THAT be a an exiting photograph? These same people are blown away when I show them the final photograph. "...I would have just walked by, never thinking this scene could be transformed into something this moving and visually powerful."

This is exactly what you will learn in this workshop. Not just how to work the techniques, but also how to see. Even a master of technique will only produce weak photographs if his or her vision is not up to par.

Throughout these 4 days, you will be taken through a journey how to generate beauitiful black and white landscape images. Through exercises in the classroom and in the field, you refine your photographic vision and techniques and set out on the way to become a better photographer.

You will learn how to see in black and white!

Finally, we'll also discuss final output options, as Marc will share his printing, framing and exhibition display techniques with the class.

Expect to shoot everyday, as Marc takes you to some of his favorite locations arround the Lower Mainland. On day 3 of the Workshop, we'll setout early for an all-day shooting trip which will take us just across the border into the US. Please make sure to bring identification. This is a short 45 minutes from downtown Vancouver, exact driving directions will be provided to you. Car pooling is encouraged, but all locations feature virtually unlimited parking.

Every evening, we'll return to the studio to download and work on our images. For those shooting film, development through a local pro lab will be available specifically for this workshop. We'll spent time critiquing and revieiwng work every day. On the final day, Marc will take you though his printing workflow and each participant will be able to print some of his favorite photographs on our professional Epson wide format printer. A high quality scanner is also available for our film shooters.
