August 20th to 24th, 2007
Vancouver Photo Workshops proudly announces
a five day workshop, "Photoshop for Black and White: The next step" with internationally acclaimed photographer, educator, and outspoken advocate of the “Digital Darkroom” Jean Miele to
be held from August 20th to 24th, 2007. Set in beautiful
Vancouver, British Columbia, this is a once in a lifetime
opportunity to expand your visual horizons under the guidance
of one of the great masters in contemporary photography.
Take part and experience a renewed sense of energy, inspiration
and vitality in your photography.
Jean teaches Adobe Photoshop workshops and presents seminars for: Adobe Systems; Apple Computer; the International Center for Photography (ICP) in New York City; Fuji USA; American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP); Advertising Photographers of America (APA); The Norwegian Fotografiakademiet; and many others.
During this 5-day workshop, Jean Miele will teach you powerful Photoshop techniques specifically for black-and-white. You will learn the best ways convert from color to black-and-white, as well as how to use layers, adjustment layers, channels, and masks to perform expert “burning and dodging,” sharpening, and contrast control, and toning.
This workshop is an unparalleled
opportunity for the Pacific Northwest photographer who
has been interested in the many high caliber photography
workshops on the east coast, but found the cost for travel
and accommodation to be prohibitive. Since the workshop
is being held at Vancouver Photo Workshops in Vancouver,
B.C. our American participants will find that the added
bonus of exchange rates will make this a real treat resulting
in excess of 14% (at time of this writing) off all your
expenses in Canada.

About
the Artist: Jean Miele
Jean Miele is an American artist who uses photography to create “perfect” places. Inspired by a love of the black-and-white landscape tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries, he has been creating monochrome landscape photographs since the mid-1980s. His landscapes are solitary places, strong and quiet, intended to remind us that moments of perfection are possible – in photography, and in our lives.
Miele’s black-and-white prints are in numerous private collections and have been exhibited in galleries from New York to Norway, including a solo exhibition at the Fernbank Museum in Atlanta, Georgia entitled “Classical Landscape Photography and the Digital Darkroom” - which was seen by more than 100,000 viewers.

Workshop course decription provided by Jean Miele
himself:
Forget “convert to grayscale.” Black and white is all about mastering the interpretation of your original
images - whether they begin as color or B&W, film or digital. If you are already using Adobe
Photoshop but want to expand your understanding of the program and bring your skills to the next
level, this workshop is for you.
During this 5-day workshop, Jean Miele will teach you powerful Photoshop techniques specifically for
black-and-white. You will learn the best ways convert from color to black-and-white, as well as how to
use layers, adjustment layers, channels, and masks to perform expert “burning and dodging,”
sharpening, and contrast control, and toning.
In addition, classroom discussions (and at least one field trip in the Vancouver area) will allow us to
touch on a wide range of technical and aesthetic topics including:
- How to optimize your shooting for digital darkroom work
- Using digital infrared black-and-white
- The latest and greatest options for black-and-white output
Workshop size is limited to assure that every student will receive lots of individual attention, and there
will be plenty of lab time to practice new techniques on your own image files.
Black-and-white printing will be covered in depth, including hands-on printing in the lab with the latest
printers and papers, and participants will complete the course with an arsenal of new Photoshop
techniques — all geared towards making your black-and-white great.
This workshop is offered in conjunction with Jean Miele’s 4-day:
“Expedition To Tofino: Light, Craft, and The Landscape,” scheduled for August 26-29, 2007.
More information on Jean's Tofino Workshop is available here!
