Intermediate Studio Lighting - Creative Portraiture:
A new and exciting addition to our VPW Lighting Intensive Series of Workshops.

For students who have taken our Practical Studio Lighting 1 Day Workshop, this is an opportunity to continue learning and get more experience shooting.

This is a very hands-on workshop focused on giving you maximum shooting time. Building on fundamental lighting principles, we start exploring various lighting techniques for creative portraiture. For this workshop, we will have a large variety of specialized lighting equipment available, including fresnels and ring flashes.

Among the topics covered will be:

- Mixing strobe and constant light sources for creative effects
- How to use specialized fresnel lights for dramatic portraits in the style of 'old' cinema and theater productions
- Proper metering techniques for specialized light equipment, ambient and as well flash
- How to use specialized equipment such as a ring flash for portraiture
- How to use alternative light sources to light your portrait
- How to use color gels
- How to light for black and white portraits

As with all of our Lighting Intensive Workshops, expect to get lots of hands-on advice. The small class size means you will have lots of opportunities to shoot and walk away with many great pictures.

Your instructor will start the day with a series of lighting demonstrations. Following this initial lecture and hands-on demonstration, the afternoon will be spent shooting.

While other local photography schools take up to 18 students for similar classes, VPW class size is strictly limited to a maximum of 12 participants, so as to ensure maximum learning opportunities and utmost personal attention.

About VPW Lighting Intensive Series Workshops:

The Lighting Intensives Series Workshops:

In the past, photography courses were structured around short (usually 3 hour) classes that typically offered a discussion or lecture on theory one week, followed by a workshop class the following week and critique the next, thereby spreading the learning experience over 15 days. Often, by the time the student gets a critique they have forgotten what they have done to get the picture to begin with or the principles they were attempting to apply.

VPW has created a new series of workshops called the “Lighting Intensives” in the belief that learning is best achieved interactively. To this end we have designed a series of intensive subject oriented one-day workshops whose sole purpose is to combine theory, practice and critique so that you can enjoy a full cycle learning experience in one day. Each workshop is specifically geared to give you the background, principles and theory that you need in the morning followed by the opportunity to apply them in the afternoon while making your own pictures of subjects that interest you.

Our class sizes are small, so you get a lot of individualized attention. We often run as many as two or three sets simultaneously so that you also get a lot of shooting time with instant critiques available from the instructor on request. Our facilities are designed to provide the very best learning environment with excellent equipment, top-notch instructors and in-studio computers for instant downloading, review and backup.

We believe that this is the very best way of learning!

Our line-up of lighting workshops currently include the following:

- Practical Studio Lighting – The basics, a prerequisite course to the series.

- Practical Location Lighting - The basics about taking your lights on location.

- Practical Studio Lighting - Product and Tabletop Photography

- Intermediate Studio Lighting - Using Multiple Lights

- Intermediate Studio Lighting - Creative Portraiture

- On-Camera Flash Workshop
