Vancouver Photo Workshops Proudly Presents:

Canadian Internationally Acclaimed Photographer

Freeman Patterson

In an exclusive, intimate 4 Day Workshop:

"Photography and Visual Design"

November 14th to 17th, 2007

Vancouver Photo Workshops proudly announces a four day workshop, "Photography and Visual Design" with Canadian Internationally Acclaimed Photographer Freeman Patterson to be held from November 14th to November 17th, 2007. Set in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to expand your visual horizons under the guidance of one of the great masters in contemporary photography. Take part and experience a renewed sense of energy, inspiration and vitality in your photography.

Since 1973 Freeman Patterson has frequently presented half-day and all-day seminars to large groups (50 to 4000 persons) in the visual arts, music, education, and ecology across Canada, the United States, and in other countries. Since 1977 he has written and illustrated four instructional books on photography and visual design and has co-authored a fifth, four large cloth-edition books, and co-authored and illustrated two more.

VPW is very proud to have the opportunity to bring Mr. Freeman Patterson back to Vancouver for what will be his 2nd workshop with VPW. This workshop is an unparalleled opportunity for the Pacific Northwest photographer who has been interested in the many high caliber photography workshops on the east coast, but found the cost for travel and accommodation to be prohibitive. Since the workshop is being held at Vancouver Photo Workshops in Vancouver, B.C. our American participants will find that the added bonus of exchange rates will make this a real treat resulting in excess of 14% (at time of this writing) off all your expenses in Canada.

Workshop course decription provided by Freeman Patterson himself:

Basic statement - The workshop medium is photography (digital or film). The workshop crafts are “seeing” and visual design, that is, using good visual design to communicate what you see and how you feel about what you see.

The illustrated talks and lectures listed below will be spread over four days, and will be alternated with periods for photography and for the evaluation of new images (made during the workshop). There will be ample opportunity for formal and informal discussion.

Detailed workshop outline and list of illustrated talks and lectures spread over the 4 day Workshop:

Opening talk – visual design as the craft of visual communication and expression (direct comparisons with the design of language)

Illustrated lecture – the role of both tone (degrees of brightness, light values) and colour in visual design, especially how they create the working building blocks of visual design, i.e. line, shape, texture, and perspective; the importance of tone in calculating good exposure

Illustrated lecture – the fundamental importance of line(s) to visual expression, their quality, character, orientation, length, etc.

Illustrated lecture – primary and secondary shapes and their visual effects

Illustrated lecture – the definition and effect of texture; discussion of both naturally occurring and photographically-created textures; texture as metaphor

Illustrated lecture – the illusion of depth on a flat surface (perspective) and how to increase and decrease its appearance

Illustrated lecture – ways/methods of arranging the four major visual building blocks within picture space for the desired expressive effect

Illustrated lecture – pulling it all together, a review
