In an exclusive, intimate 5 Day Workshop:

"Digital Black and White Landscapes "

September 20th - 24th, 2007

Vancouver Photo Workshops proudly announces a four day workshop, "Digital Black and White Landscapes" with internationally acclaimed photographer Carlan Tapp to be held from September 20th - 24th, 2007. Set in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to expand your visual horizons under the guidance of one of the great masters in contemporary photography. Take part and experience a renewed sense of energy, inspiration and vitality in your photography.

VPW is very proud to have the opportunity to bring Carlan Tapp to Vancouver for what will be his first 2 Workshops in our beautiful City. This workshop is an unparalleled opportunity for the Pacific Northwest photographer who has been interested in the many high caliber photography workshops on the east coast, but found the cost for travel and accommodation to be prohibitive. Since the workshop is being held at Vancouver Photo Workshops in Vancouver, B.C. our American participants will find that the added bonus of exchange rates will make this a real treat resulting in excess of 14% (at time of this writing) off all your expenses in Canada.

Workshop course decription provided by Carlan Tapp:

When we think of the great masters of the black and white landscape visions of the large format camera and traditional film processes come to mind.
Today’s digital photographic technology has opened new doorways to explore in the creation of black and white landscape images.
This workshop is for the photographer desiring to learn and understand the aesthetic and technical considerations in creating digital black and white landscape images.  We learn to combine traditional Zone System methodology with new digital black and white processes in PhotoShop.
Working each day on location we take the time to see and fully express the spirit of the black and white landscape.

In the electronic darkroom we combine traditional and new electronic processes with aesthetic and technical considerations necessary for image creation.  Using traditional Zone System methodology with new digital processes we create a complete digital grayscale workflow.
Working on personal black and white images created in the field, we cover topics including: calibrating the grayscale digital system, creating a custom “grayscale working space” in PhotoShop, converting RAW capture image into grayscale digital files, using input and output profiles for grayscale, digital film scanning, evaluating the grayscale scan, contrast masking, sharpening, and digital “dodging and burning” techniques using adjustment layers and masking in PhotoShop.  We compare and explore the merits of 8 bit and 16 bit grayscale digital working spaces.  Duplicating many traditional black and white darkroom techniques we delve deeply into PhotoShop with advanced digital processes for the creation of the fine black and white digital print.
Blending together both traditional and new emerging techniques and technologies we begin to reveal the extraordinary possibilities available to us for digital black and white expressive landscape work.
