Vancouver Photo Workshops Proudly Presents:

Internationally Acclaimed Photographer

Dan Burkholder

In an exclusive Workshop:

"Capturing and Printing the High Dynamic Range Image"

November 16 - 18, 2007

Vancouver Photo Workshops proudly announces a 3 day hands-on workshop,"Capturing and Printing the High Dynamic Range Image" with internationally acclaimed photographer Dan Burkholder to be held from November 16-18, 2007. Set in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, this workshop is designed especially for real photographers.

High Dynamic Range imaging (HDR) is the most exciting development in photography since the zoom lens. We can now photograph scenes of extreme contrast that overwhelm film or a single digital capture. Dark interiors with sunlit windows are no longer a challenge; landscapes with deep shadows and bright highlights can be tackled with confidence. For HDR photography we employ special shooting techniques combined with powerful software tools to produce final prints with lush shadow detail and gloriously detailed highlights.

But making a beautiful print from an HDR image is more than bracketing and processing. In this workshop you’ll learn not only how to shoot and process your HDR captures, but how to precisely control the full range of color and contrast in your images. Best of all, you’ll make prints that sing with detail and tonal vibrance.

You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to tackle scenes that you used to walk away from because you feared the curse of empty black shadows and blown highlights. Get a Kung Fu grip on HDR shooting and printing!

What we’ll cover in the workshop:

  • Learn camera techniques and accessories that make exposing for HDR fast, foolproof and easy.
  • Discover easy, recipe-like procedures for capturing high contrast scenes for HDR processing.
  • Delve into the brave new world of 32-bit images.
  • Learn the right and wrong ways to process your HDR images.
  • Learn how to use the parts of Color Management you need to make prints that look just like your monitor. Banish printing surprises once and for all!
  • Develop new selection and masking skills that let you create seductive color and detail in your HDR images.
  • Print your HDR images on luxurious archival inkjet papers.

What to Bring to the Workshop:

It is recommended that participants bring their own Laptop computer for this workshop (Mac or PC). If you do not have access to a Computer, you can rent one from VPW. The rental charge is $150 for the workshop, and you can select this option when you register. Please have Photoshop CS2 or CS3 installed. A fully functional (30 day trial) version of Photoshop CS3 can be downloaded for free from www.adobe.com.

You should bring a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera that is capable of shooting Raw format. A solid tripod and remote release are also necessary. Don’t forget memory cards, spare batteries and card readers. A wide-angle lens is strongly recommended.

You should also bring a portfolio or other box for safe transporting of your final prints. Bring a notebook and lots of enthusiasm. And come well rested too!

Prerequisites:

You should feel comfortable with your camera and tripod. A basic working knowledge of Photoshop CS or later is very helpful too.

About the Artist:

Dan Burkholder was one of the first photographic artists to embrace digital technology in the early 1990’s. True to his love of the traditional photograph, Dan uses digital technology to build images that still look and feel like real photographs, not like something from a graphic designer’s portfolio. Melding his unique vision with mastery of both the wet and digital darkrooms, his platinum prints are now included in many museum and private collections.

Originating the digital-negative process in 1992, Burkholder has helped open doors for all black and white photographers interested in moving into the new electronic technologies. His award-winning book, Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printing, is regarded as the most authoritative work in the field.

Dan has taught classes and workshops at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the lnternational Center of Photography in New York, the University of Texas at San Antonio, the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego and others. Active with the Texas Photographic Society for many years, he is currently serving on the Advisory Board for this organization.

Other Photoshop workshops might teach you the basics, but Dan combines decades of classic photographic experience with a fine art aesthetic to help you learn the new digital craft with pixels at your command and a smile on your face.
